Account books, bank books, and cash books, 1841-1867, kept by businessman Peter McMartin of Jersey City, New Jersey. Bank books record McMartin's account information with the Merchant's Exchange Bank of New York City, including withdrawals, deposits, and balances, 1849-1867. Account books, 1841-1863, record personal and business transactions, including payments for rent, household goods, cloths, sundries, stable expenses, taxes, purchases of stock and related investments, government bonds, investments in commercial shipping vessels, land purchases, loans, etc.; as well as income from land sales, dividends, interest payments, bills receivable, rents, earnings from shipping ventures, including accounts for the individual ships Typhoon, America, Fidelia, Empire State, and others; railroad bonds, etc. Included are three volumes containing McMartin's individual account information with the firm of Winslow, Lanier & Co., and two volumes recording accounts, 1844-1858, for land purchased in Illinois and Wisconsin.
